What is a COVID Marshal?

The COVID Marshal is an important role that helps to keep workplaces COVIDSafe.

COVID Marshals are responsible for monitoring a worksite’s compliance with its COVIDSafe Plan and additional industry-specific obligations. They support workers to follow COVIDSafe principles and look for ways to continually improve a business’s COVIDSafe Plan, including entry screening, physical distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE), workplace bubbles, hygiene, cleaning and record-keeping.

Which venues must use a COVID Check-in Marshal?

Some venues must have a COVID Check-in Marshal at all public entrances when the venue or facility is permitted to open. They are:

  • Physical recreational facilities:
  • indoor sport and physical recreation
  • outdoor sport or physical recreation
  • cardio or strength-training facility
  • personal-training facility
  • trampolining centre, play centre, indoor skatepark
  • indoor and outdoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, spa, sauna, steam room, and springs.
  • Community facilities: community centre or community hall, public library, youth centre
  • Creative arts facilities

How to work out how many vest I need?

Employers must assign COVID Check-in Marshals to each venue entrance to ensure people check-in. COVID Marshals may need to move around the venue to carry out their duties. There may be circumstances, such as for larger workplaces, where it is not possible for one worker to fulfil the requirements of both roles at the same time.

What COVID Marshal training is available to workers in the building and construction industry?

To support small construction sites, the Department of Education and Training has developed a new online training course on infection control for COVID Marshals in the construction industry. This training course is free to access and available here –  COVID Marshal Training for Victorian Construction Industry.

The course is approximately 45 minutes long and can be completed on your phone, tablet or computer. On completion, you will be issued a certificate that you can download to show your employer.
